Broadcast Electronics

original designs

Broadcast Electronics (BE) is the premier provider of mission-critical solutions for over-the-air and internet radio. Broadcast Electronics products encompass program generation, audio and data management, interfacility transport, and analog and digital transmission. For more than four decades, BE pioneering developments have set the industry standards for innovation and reliability, while providing broadcasters with new options for operational productivity and income generation. My mission is to redesign the visual branding, and refresh Broadcast Electronics' 40 year old visual appeal. Reassuring they are recognized as modern, innovative, and relaible.

The Logo

symbol iterations

For my intial symbol iterations I wanted to avoid headphones, and anything that might make the viewer think BE makes music. Abandoning the 80s chrome, I set out to create something more modern. Some challenges: the red background for the microphone variant ended up looking like an apple core, and radio waves are a difficult concept without getting too cliche. Further colour study and refinements were needed.

The Logo

type iterations

An in depth typographic and type + symbol exploration was done. I had trouble getting away from the radio tower motif, when Broadcast Electronics is more about the hardware in the studio rather than the structures doing the transmitting.

The Logo

finalists

After a critique and a color change, I had my symbol selected. In depth color study, typeface exploration, and layout design ended up fleshing out the branding guidelines. A process pdf of the logo design can be downloaded here.

Branding Guide

8 pages of brand specifications

The most detailed brand guidelines I've ever done. Check out a PDF of it here!

Website

responsive website project

The Broadcast Electronics website was a final project that focused on responsiveness, meaning it adapts to a desktop, tablet, or phone. The branding from the previous portions of the project were applied here, and this is also my first venture into html and css. I went the extra mile and featured drop down menus within drop down menus using a little javascript. This is a mock up, so the only pages you can navigate to are the home page, the studio products page, and the updates page. Process PDF for the website The actual website's url

Reflection

The broadcast electronics project was a 3 month endeavour that is the most ambitious project I have ever undertaken. I learned a great deal, including how to build a website. If I had to do something on this scale again I feel I could repeat this process in half the time, with better results. This is probably an accurate glimpse into what it will be like to design post-college, and assuming this is as tough as it gets, I am ready to dive into the design work world.
