eco friendly chocolate packaging
Cacao focuses on the fact that all candy bar wrappers are made up of trash. Nothing compostable, nothing recycleable, and many of these candy bar packages have unecessary layers. Think of reese's pieces: plastic wrapper, with a tray, with a cup wrapper, and then the candy. Alternatively, candy like starbursts are individually wrapped. My target demographic was the environmentally conscious college student, and Cacao aims to tackle these problems.
Tinted Packaging
The first iteration of Cacao packages involved a tint and a large percentage. These simultaneously represented the amount of post consumer packaging in the material, and the darkness of the chocolate. The sleeve added an unecessary amount of material, and took away from the main goal of having minimal waste. Another problem is that this design makes darker chocolate the "better" option, when some consumers might want to have milky chocolate and a large amount of post consumer product.
2nd iteration, and a display
After a redesign, the project took a turn for the authentic. I wanted to have a feeling of "fresh" chocolate, as if the bar was cut, weighed, and packaged AFTER you ordered it, much like a loaf of fresh bread or a cut of meat from a deli. Tying this rustic branding together, and reducing the amount of packaging and ink used, this is the point of sale that I came up with. View the in depth process pdf here.
